Creating Community and Connection Through Alpha
At Citizen Church, we believe hospitality and intentional spaces foster meaningful conversations, life change, and spiritual growth. One of our most effective tools for cultivating this is Alpha—a program designed to bring people together for open and honest discussions about faith. Over the years, we’ve refined our approach to Alpha, crafting a seamless experience from meals to videos, discussions, and more.
This guide walks you through the key elements of hosting Alpha with excellence, focusing on hospitality, organization, and meaningful connection.
What is Alpha?
Alpha is more than a program—it’s a space for exploring the big questions of life and faith in a safe, welcoming environment. Whether someone is new to Christianity, searching for authentic community, or curious about the Holy Spirit, Alpha provides room for discussion and discovery.
Since its introduction at Citizen Church in 2018, Alpha has created countless stories of transformation, becoming a cornerstone of our small group ministry.

We’ve tailored Alpha into a 6-week format for greater engagement, combining two videos into some sessions while keeping the content impactful and manageable. Here’s how we structure Alpha across semesters:
Spring Semester: Held in homes, fostering an intimate and personal setting.
Summer Semester: Hosted outdoors in larger spaces for a casual, communal vibe.
Fall Semester: Held on campus, blending the energy of a larger group with focused discussions.
Each week includes:
Meals: A communal meal to break the ice and build connection.
Videos: Two short, thought-provoking films addressing questions like “Who is Jesus?” or “How can I make the most of my life?”
Discussion: Small group conversations, guided by trained leaders, that encourage openness and curiosity.

The Role of Hospitality in Alpha
Hospitality is the backbone of Alpha, setting the tone for every interaction. From the meals we serve to the way we structure our spaces; every detail is designed to make guests feel valued and at ease.
The Power of Meals
Meals create connections. For Alpha, we’ve leaned into the concept of “Build-Your-Own” bars—a simple, versatile way to cater to dietary preferences while keeping costs manageable. Over six weeks, guests enjoy themed meals like a taco bar, baked potato bar, or salad bar, each encouraging creativity and conversation.
Pro Tips for Meal Success:
Focus on variety to accommodate dietary restrictions.
Keep serving simple with bulk tableware and disposable options.
Plan for leftovers with storage containers or donation strategies.
Simplify beverages with a water dispenser instead of individual drinks.
Creating Welcoming Spaces
Each Alpha session begins with a welcoming, comfortable environment. Whether indoors or outdoors, the setting should be clean, warm, and inviting. Think soft lighting, thoughtful décor, and spaces that encourage conversation.
Organizing the Alpha Team
A strong team makes Alpha run smoothly. Here’s the high-level structure we’ve found effective:
Community Director: A staff member overseeing the ministry as part of their job responsibilities.
Alpha Director: A volunteer leader responsible for directly guiding the team and ministry.
Alpha Leaders: Small group facilitators who encourage discussion and connection.
Training is essential. Each semester, our Alpha leaders complete official Alpha training to ensure they’re equipped to guide discussions with sensitivity and clarity.
Why Alpha Works
Alpha thrives because it combines intentionality, simplicity, and a focus on meaningful connection. Here’s why the process is so effective:
Structured Content: Videos and discussion guides make it easy for leaders to facilitate.
Hospitality-Focused: Meals and welcoming spaces create an environment where guests feel valued.
Relational Emphasis: Small groups encourage authenticity, vulnerability, and connection.
Scalable Design: Whether in homes or on campus, Alpha can adapt to various settings.
